IN THIS MONTH'S ISSUE
This month I’ve been thinking a lot about the old adage ‘no pain, no gain’. Is the ability to suffer pain what separates the champions from the also-rans? I suspect there is more to it than this – talent, desire to win, training and mental fortitude all have a place – but there is no doubting that, in order to cross the finish-line first, you have to have a pretty high pain threshold and be prepared to suffer in the name of your sport.
The March issue of Running fitness is dedicated to 10k running, perhaps the most popular – and painful – of all the road distances. As Martin Yelling – a sub 30-minute 10k runner at his best – confides: “If you want to run a killer 10k, then you have to be prepared to hurt.”
10k pain is a very distinct type of pain – it’s a lung-busting, strength sapping, sick-inducing kind of pain that can floor even the hardiest of souls.
