Get specific!

Liz meets an ultra-distance runner who’s set himself the challenge of running faster over ‘shorter’ distances. The answer? It’s all down to ‘specificity’ as Liz explains

In striving to be the best runner you can be, it goes without saying that training long, hard and fast are all essential ingredients of success. Yet, get carried away and loose focus and you can soon slip into training without real and true purpose and into training for training’s sake rather than training with intent with a clear goal in mind.

‘Specificity’ is a training principle that does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s about completing training that is specific to your desired outcome and key goal. It’s about training smart. To really be your best, optimise the training that you do and achieve your goal you need to train your body to deal with the demands it will face in your key running events.
